How to Make Jhansi Ki Rani Fancy Dress Costume At Home

Jhansi Ki Rani fancy dress costume is a firm favourite amongst the mothers of little girls. It provides a little dose of history, a moral on being independent, and a solid sense of self sufficiency to the little girl. So, if your daughter is looking forward to her fancy dress competition and you are looking for fancy dress ideas, then you should make her a Jhansi Ki Rani Fancy Dress Costume. Here’s our DIY guide designed to teach you how to make a Jhansi Ki Rani Laxmibai costume.

Things You Will Need For Jhansi Ki Rani Fancy Dress Costume

  • Red / blue sari with border,
  • Red turban,
  • Old dupatta,
  • Cardboard,
  • Permanent marker,
  • Silver foil,
  • Black chart paper,
  • Thread,
  • Old doll.

Step 1: The Jhansi Ki Rani Fancy Dress Sari

The Jhansi Ki Rani fancy dress costume hinges on the sari. You need either a red coloured sari or a blue coloured sari but both need to be with a border. More importantly, you need to tie it in the right manner which is the way sari is draped in Maharashtra.

It’s a simple enough process and if you don’t know how to drape a sari in the Maharashtrian style, you can check the video we’ve provided. Jhansi Ki Rani is famous because she stood up to the English and rode to war.

Step 2: Turban

Jhansi Ki Rani fancy dress costume will also require your daughter to wear a turban on her head. However, there is not defined way that this turban needs to be worn so you can tie it like a bandana on her head. Be careful of the fact that this turban was almost always red.

Step 3: Equipment

Jhansi Ki Rani Fancy Dress CostumeJhansi Ki Rani was a warrior queen. So, you need to hand your daughter a sword and a shield for her Jhansi Ki Rani fancy dress costume. You can make the sword with the help of cardboard.

Draw the shape of a sword on a piece of cardboard and cut it out. Wrap this piece with silver foil to give it the sword look. At the grip, wrap the cardboard with a black chart paper.

The shield of Jhansi Ki Rani was round with four pegs in the centre arranged in a square. Jhansi Ki Rani also wore a small shield. This means that you shield can’t be bigger than a standard cooking pan.

Draw the shape on a piece of cardboard and cut it out. Instead of pasting four pegs in the front, make holes and tie threads through them with knots on the front. This will give the shield a handhold as well as the right look from the front and make the Jhansi Ki Rani fancy dress costume more real.

Step 4: Baby

jhansi ki rani fancy dress costumeThe feats of Jhansi Ki Rani are considered to be great because she fought the British while her baby was tied to her back.

If you really want to make your daughter’s Jhansi Ki Rani fancy dress costume perfect then you need to create this element too.

For this, you only need an old doll of your daughter’s and a dupatta. Take an old dupatta and tie it around your daughter’s torso from one shoulder to the opposite side of the waist. In this makeshift sling, you can hang the doll.

Step 5: Speech

Jhansi Ki Rani speeches can really bring together a Jhansi Ki Rani fancy dress costume. However, they need to be chosen very carefully. Things to consider, while choosing what your daughter can say on stage, include how easy the lines are for her and how appropriate they are for the character she is portraying. In the case of Jhansi Ki Rani fancy dress, we’ve picked out the lines for you too.

Chamak uthi san sattavan mein, veh talvar purani thi,

Bundele harbolon ke munh hamne suni kahani thi,

Khoob ladi mardani veh to Jhansi wali rani thi.

      Hi Anuja,

Thanks for your response. Since the full Jhansi Ki Rani costume is unavailable, I suggest that you buy it on a piecemeal basis. Here are some links to help you out.

      For saree: http://amzn.to/2v8RSCA

For sword and shield: http://amzn.to/2v6L0qN (This one is for pirate accessories but most of them can be used for jhansi ki rani too)
http://amzn.to/2v951vu (This is just sword and shield)

For jewellery: http://amzn.to/2wv1YgC (Full set, very good option but expensive)
      http://amzn.to/2v6TL4p (bangles)
      http://amzn.to/2vC5A44 (necklace)
      http://amzn.to/2ubnoON (A cheap set)

For shoes: This is the most challenging because sizes vary. I won’t offer you links here. You just need plain silver or gold booties for your little girl, which I’m sure she already has. If you can’t find the right shoes to buy, you can also send her in barefoot.

Whatever you do, don’t forget the tika and the “khub ladi mardani” poem. The last can really bring it together.

Also, I suggest you use Amazon Prime for deliveries since you have the deadline of 09/08/2017

      Hi Krishnan,

      Thanks for your comment.

You should try to get your kid to recite some amazing facts about Jhani ki Rani. Here are our suggestions.

      1. Jhansi is often called the Indian Joan of Arc
      2. Her first name was not Lakshmibai. Instead, she was born as Manikarnika.
      3. As a kid, she was also called Chabili which means playful in Peshwa.
      4. Her son Damodar Rao was adopted. His original name was Anand Rao.
      5. Before the Battle of Jhansi, Lakshmibai announced: “We fight for independence”.

This should be long enough but if you want more, you can add more interesting facts about her.
